on subtle nuisances and the predilections of the Democratic and Republican candidates for
president, while ignoring any substantive coverage of the issues important to Americans.

Libertarian presidential candidate Gov. Gary Johnson will join a group of speakers at Duke
University on Sept. 20 who will attempt to elevate the discussion above the talking-points and
one-liners spouted by the major party candidates.

The event, schedule for 7 p.m. in the Reynolds Theater, is titled “Elevate – A Substantive
Discussion on Ignored Policy Issue.” Featured speakers in addition to Gov. Johnson will include:
John Glaser, assistant editor at Antiwar.com; Robert Shibley, senior vice president of The
Foundation for Individual Rights in Education; and Barbara Howe, Libertarian candidate for
N.C. governor.

This event is sponsored by the Duke College Libertarians. Co-Sponsors include Duke Political
Union, Duke College Republicans, The Roosevelt Institute at Duke and the North Carolina
Staste University Young Americans for Liberty.

The event is free and open to the public, but tickets will be handed out at the door to comply with
the fire code. The event will be interpreted for the deaf and hard of hearing. Look for updates on
the event Facebook page.

University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, in the Student Union room 2420 from 12-1:30 p.m. Both
lectures are free and open to the public.

Judge Gray will also conduct two fund-raising events for the Johnson-Gray ticket and state Libertarian candidates. The first on Aug. 27, he will be held at the Liberty Oak Restaurant, 100 West. Washington St., Greensboro from 6:30-8:30 p.m. The second will be held Aug. 28 at the Tir Na Nog Pub, 218 South Blount Street, Raleigh from 5-7:30 p.m. Admission for both these events is $25 for students and $40 for others.

Please support Libertarian Brian Irving, who is running for Congress in North Carolina District 2.

The State of the Union is a perpetual state of war. Democrats and Republicans have used the fear of real or imaginary enemies, both at home and abroad, to manufacture and manipulate Americans, to divide us, to pit one racial, religious or social group against another – all for the purpose of stampeding us into giving up more and more our a precious liberties for the false promise of security.

I am running for Congress because I believe it’s time to stop all war. Stop the wars in and Afghanistan and the multitude of other nations were our troops are fighting. Stop the war on drugs and alternative lifestyles. Stop the war on immigrants. Stop the war on civil liberties. Stop the war on the U.S. Constitution. Stop the wars on food, healthcare, guns … Stop All War.

This campaign draws this theme and its inspiration from my good friend R. Lee Wrights, who was a candidate for the Libertarian nomination for President of the United States. The issue papers and statements that appear here are adopted from his campaign.

My platform is simple: I want to reduce the size, scope and power of the federal government at all levels and on all issues, and will oppose increasing the size, scope and power of the federal government at any level, for any purpose.

I want to restore the republic our Founding Fathers established, a government of limited and enumerated powers whose only purpose is to protect our unalienable, individual rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

My goal will be to have a federal government small enough to fit inside the U.S. Constitution.

WHEREAS, the Libertarian Party of Wake County (WakeLP) is dedicated to limited government that protects the rights and privacy of its citizens, it opposes NC State Constitutional Amendment One which would seek to violate this principle and abridge the rights of its citizens to form a union with any person of their choosing and receive the same recognition and benefits as all other citizens.
The idea that governments should define “marriage” or give permission for marriage is inconsistent with the principles of liberty. A person’s union with another is no concern of the state. Accordingly, in addition to our opposition to this proposed constitutional amendment, WakeLP calls for the state to leave marriage to religious institutions or private contracts and to repeal or amend all laws making distinctions based on a state of marriage.
It is in this spirit that WakeLP pledges it support for the Coalition to Protect NC Families and its effort to defeat Amendment One.

III.

New officers were elected for the 2012-2013 term.

Chair: Joy Elliot
Vice Chair: Susan Hogarth
Treasurer: Daniel Chang

The office of Secretary is still vacant. If you are interested in serving as WakeLP Secretary, please contact the chair.

IV.

A rerun from the January 3rd LoC. — While we as Libertarians are fundamentally opposed to almost all taxation, there is one thing that you can do to put a small portion of your tax dollars to work in a way that you want. The North Carolina tax form every year has a tax check off where the taxpayer can make a $3 contribution to the political party of his or her choice.

Checking the box doesn’t increase your tax, but it does give you the opportunity to direct some of your tax dollars to something you believe in.

When you file your state taxes this year, please be sure to check off $3 to the Libertarian Party under the Political Party Financing Fund.

Ten years after the horrific terrorist attack on Sept. 11, 2001, the most dangerous threat to freedom America faces comes not from any terrorist or nation, but from our own political leaders who continue to use lies, deceit and fear to seize unconstitutional power and claim immoral authority under the pretense of protecting us from home, said R. Lee Wrights, a candidate for the Libertarian nomination for president.

“The most dangerous threat to our freedom is allowing the fear of the world to blind us to the terror we face at home, from those who use lies, deceit, and fear, who seize unconstitutional power and claim immoral authority under the pretense of protecting us from harm,” the Winston-Salem native wrote in an op-ed on his campaign website.

“Rather than responding to this attack the way Americans usually have responded to adversity — by picking themselves up, marshaling their courage and resources, and building a better, stronger nation, our political and military leaders choose to exploit 9/11 in order to increase and strengthen their own power, turning America into a nation of quivering victims,” he said.

“America must shake off the pallor of victimization and stop being afraid,” Wrights wrote. On the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 terrorists attack, it is time to tell our pretended leaders that ten years of fear is enough. It is time we stand up united and say – enough is enough! We are a free people and we will not be ruled by fear.”

Wrights, 53, a libertarian writer and political activist, is seeking the presidential nomination because he believes the Libertarian message in 2012 must be a loud, clear and unequivocal call to stop all war. To that end he has pledged that 10 percent of all donations to his campaign will be spent for ballot access so that the stop all war message can be heard in all 50 states. The lifetime member of the Libertarian Party is co-founder and editor of the free speech online magazine Liberty For All. Born in Winston-Salem, N.C., he now lives and works in Texas.
